Badgers Lose to Big Newport Team

Newport, WA – Last Friday the 1-0 Bonners Ferry Badgers traveled across our western border to face
the Newport Grizzlies. Hopes were high that the Badgers would be able to capitalize on the momentum
of the come-from-behind victory against Libby last week, but Newport players Daniel Fitzmorris, Ty
McDaniel, and Connor Mullaley had other plans. Combined, they boast a force of over 900 pounds on
the offensive and defensive lines.
The scrappy Badgers held their own early in the game going toe-to-toe with the larger team for the
entire first quarter, but were understandably worn down as the game progressed. Newport’s
quarterback Ryan Rapp found Jeron Knight in the endzone for the first points of the game on a 15-yard
touchdown pass. While there were bright spots for the visiting Badgers, after that play there were not
enough of those bright spots to keep Bonners in the game.
The Badgers often started their offensive drives strong, running the ball well, but too often stalled after
a few first downs. The defense also struggled but benefited from a great interception and return
courtesy of Christian Trocke, but the offense could not move the ball and went three-and-out. Newport
player Jeron Kondright caught another TD pass and Rapp took one into the endzone himself to wrap up
the first half with a 21-0 Newport lead.
The second half showed some promise for the boys in blue. Newport started with possession but Rapp’s
pass was picked off by Anthony Skeen and returned for about 25 yards to the Newport 13 yard line. A
few plays later Trocke punched through the line for the Badgers first touchdown. Good special teams
play took advantage of a strong Jason Shutes kickoff and the Badgers had Newport pinned deep in their
own territory. The defense looked like they were going to hold the Bears on 3rd and 8 and the large
contingent of Badger fans began to hope that a comeback reminiscent of the previous week was
imminent. Ryan Rapp had other ideas, though, and on a broken play found a hole he was able to
scamper through and he would not be brought down before picking up 68 yards. Three plays later Jeron
Konkright caught his third touchdown pass and robbed the Badgers of their early second half
momentum.
Bonners Ferry made a noble attempt on their ensuing possession, converting on one 4th down try but
falling short on another giving Newport possession on downs. A handful of plays later Newport found
the endzone again and set the final score at 34-7. Shutes did attempt to put a few more points on the
board with a 37-yard field goal attempt which had enough distance but missed wide left. The Badgers
just did not have the physical strength to push Newport’s big linemen around for as long as they needed
to, and the Grizzlies 'running backs consistently hit the holes hard and fast, setting up the opportunities
Konkright needed to haul in two touchdown passes. “The bottom, bottom line is they’re a good football
team. They’re big, they’re fast, they’re strong, they’re physical, and we didn’t particularly handle it all
that well said Coach DePriest after the game.
There were times, though, when the Badgers did not help their case. “We shot ourselves in the foot
many times, (we) had penalties in key situations. I don’t think we played very consistent.”
The Badgers will have a chance to improve on their consistency next week when they host another
Washington school, Medical Lake. Last year Bonners Ferry traveled to Medical Lake and lost a heart-
breaker in the final minutes, and will doubtless be looking to set things right this year in Idaho.
